Reaching the makeover milestone

Tuesday, 16 March 2010

The feelings I had watching the total body makeover episode on Tuesday were overwhelming! I remember exactly what it felt like to look at myself in the mirror and struggle to see any beauty, self-worth, or sparkle in my eyes, or feel any love for the person looking back.

So seeing each contestant consider themselves in the mirror was very powerful for me. For the first time in a long time they actually looked at themselves – it was so rewarding to see them acknowledge the changes they have made and hold their heads high with pride.

Lisa and Phoebe are the perfect examples of something we’ve spoken about many times before: mental strength. It is wonderful to see them dramatically made-over as the strong, independent women they are.

I had the most fascinating insight into Phoebe’s journey when she revealed how she used to eat to rebel against and punish her parents for their criticism of her weight. Facing up to this fact could be life-changing for Phoebe – her 'coming of age' moment, perhaps? One thing's for certain: she's no-longer “everyone’s baby” with that fire-engine-red hair!

And to see Shannon brimming with confidence as he walked down the runway, suited and booted, was totally fabulous. Losing the beard for him was very symbolic – there is nowhere left to hide.

It's hard to express what an amazing experience these makeovers are. You see, as a contestant on The Biggest Loser, you spend virtually 24/7 in bike shorts and t-shirts. So slipping into something silky, well tailored or brightly coloured is a dream!

Two years have passed since my total body makeover but I remember it like it was yesterday! It was a really pivotal moment for me. When you're living The Biggest Loser life, your days revolve around training, food and production, so you really don't get the chance to acknowledge how far you've come – but that's exactly what these makeovers are designed to do.

Such phenomenal weight loss makes it hard for the mind to keep up with the body’s changes and, for example, I had no idea what clothes size I was when I left the show, which made shopping exhausting. But I’m pleased to report that my mind did, eventually, catch up and I’ve now got some mighty fine shopping skills!
