Watching the contestants set out on this trek, carrying sandbags representing their previous weight, it was obvious that they had no idea how difficult it was going to be. Not because of the length of the trek or weight on their backs, but because it would be a reminder of the lives they use to live.
Their weight controlled every aspect of their lives – how much they missed out on, how little they believed in themselves, how sad they felt, how difficult it was to put on a ‘happy face’. This trek would be a reminder of how they had been existing but not really living before The Biggest Loser.
When you gain weight, a little piece of you disappears with every kilo that goes on the scales. And when you lose that weight, the opposite happens. You gain something mentally with each kilo you lose. This trek will make the contestants sit up and truly realize how they have changed.
I remember the trek I did in Hawaii on my series so well. To this day, it’s one of my most special moments because it gave me a glimpse back to the life I once lived. I use this memory as a reminder of my old life, and to maintain my new weight. I was given a snap shot of my old existence and mind set – and I never want those feelings back again.
This will make all the contestants truly stop, reflect and acknowledge how far they have come since starting the crazy little rollercoaster ride of The Biggest Loser.
Now for poor Phil and Joe, out there in their own little Camp Commando! I can’t help but feel so very sorry for them. However, will this give the two boys in the desert an advantage?
We all know how a change in the environment can unsettle the contestants – look at what happened to Phil when he first moved to train with the Commando. So I personally think there may be some small numbers this week and the contestants will be thrilled to have no elimination.
Believe in yourself.
