Running the marathon...

Thursday 8 April, 2010

A few months ago, the announcement that all of The Biggest Loser contestants would compete in a 42km marathon to win a spot back in the house sparked a hot debate in my family. A debate I’ve also have with many, many strangers on the street. All of them were certain that there is no way a person as obese and unfit as these contestants could possibly run 42km after just a few months of training. But what disturbed them even more was my very simple answer: “If they believe they can, they will”.

It's all about pride

From the moment this race was announced, I knew these contestants would be able to do it. There may be some that won’t get through, but even they will have achieved so much more than they had ever dreamed.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not simply a case of ‘believe it and it will happen’. If you want success it takes commitment, sacrifice and a lot of hard work. But what will really make the difference is the little voice inside that pushes you past the pain. It will be those with the mental strength, those who believe they can do it, that will be ultimately be successful.

And, this isn’t just about winning a spot back in the house; this is about being successful in life. When you achieve something great, something you never believed you could ever do, you look at life differently. You realise that you can do anything and that you can learn anything. This is success!

Northern achievements

Watching Phil and Joe set out on the 42km was the highlight of the series for me. I cried and had goose pimples because these guys entered Camp Biggest Loser morbidly obese and with no self-worth or self-belief. And now, look at what they are achieving!

You may say that these achievements are possible in Camp Biggest Loser, where everything is provided for you, and that outside it’s different. But at the end of the day, in Camp Biggest Loser you still have to make the choices. You wake up early and train. You stay up late and train, even when you’re tired and sore. You choose which foods to cook. And you choose to take a risk or not.

It’s all about choice at Camp Biggest Loser – in exactly the same way it is when you’re at home. Success is a choice.

Did you know, I used to watch The Biggest Loser and think what the contestants were doing was out of my reach? Wow, that was what I truly believed and yet look at what I achieved! I see life very differently now.

Personal goals

My wish for you is that you too realize that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to. Whether it be weight loss or changing something in your life. Draw inspiration from what these guys have achieved – something they never thought possible.

It may take hard work and sacrifice, but nobody said life was going to be easy. What I can guarantee you, though, is that it will be worth it.

What have you got inside of you that you haven’t discovered yet?

Believe in yourself,

Ali x
