Hearts rule heads – Holly and Mel go home

Episode 32, 9 March 2009

Alison's Biggest Loser Blog: an insider's view of the Couples series

I was surprised by last night’s elimination – the first dry-eye one of the series. After weeks of voting with their heads, the couples followed their hearts and granted Holly and Mel their wish to go home.

Like Michelle, I have to say I’m disappointed… and frustrated. Holly and Mel are missing out on some amazing experiences by choosing to leave in this way, and chances are they’ll regret it.

There is something the sisters said at the weigh-in on Sunday that bugged me all day yesterday – it was when they named being out of their comfort zone as a valid reason to leave the game.

If I had been Michelle in that room with them last night, I would have said: “Listen honey, being out of your comfort zone is where you learn things about yourself. It’s where you GROW.” I never wanted to leave my comfort zone either, but Loser helped me discover things – amazing things – about myself by pushing me out of my comfort zone.

If the journey taught me anything, it’s that losing weight is the easiest thing in the world. The hardest thing in the world is keeping it off and to do this, you need to embrace everything Loser has to offer and stay in the game for as long as possible.

But I guess I’m not being 100% fair because I do recognise how far Holly and Mel have come from the perspective of their relationship. It’s great to see them restored as sisters again.

Mel’s journey is also a very good lesson in forgiveness and letting go. When asked about the years of bullying Holly subjected her to, Mel said: “It’s not just something you forget but I learnt that if I carry that burden around with me, I’m never going to have a big sister.”

Those are wise words.

I know there were times in my journey where I had to forgive others, forgive myself, forgive the whole darn universe! Sometimes you just have to let it go. As Mel has discovered, you can’t hang on to the hatred – it doesn’t serve you well.

However, it’s great to see that the girls are doing well on the outside and are happy to be home.

I’m looking forward to seeing the remaining contestants break through their barriers on tonight’s episode. Be sure to tune in at 7PM on TEN and check your inbox in the morning for my daily update.
