Teresa heads home

Episode 50, 30 March 2009

Alison's Biggest Loser Blog: an insider's view of the Couples series

The girl’s got it – that’s what I thought to myself when Julie revealed the deciding vote that last night sent Teresa home. While Eliminations are usually heartbreaking and it’s a shame to see her go, I can’t feel sad for Teresa.

Of all the contestants I predict that Teresa will be the most successful out of the house and is likely to maintain her weight loss for a very long time. Why? Because she’s got it. She’s changed.

She’s heard the lessons about diet and exercise and has been fundamentally transformed. More importantly she’s genuinely learned to like herself and take pride in herself. She’s also recognised that there is a lot of beauty inside herself and part of her contribution to life is to let it out.

Teresa was never in it for the money or her two minutes of fame. She came on a journey of self-discovery and, in that sense, she’s won.

Take a moment to read her parting words which I think are very profound: “I’d love to stay [in the house] and, seriously, I’ve had an awesome time, but I’m going home knowing I’m beautiful and I’m definitely going home knowing who I am… I value my family more than anything and the greatest gift I can give them is to succeed. And I’ve done that.”

What Teresa’s also done is proved how gracious she can be in defeat. When Cam and Julie voted in accordance with the parent/child alliance she didn’t lash out or accuse them of being unfair. She recognised that Julie had made a promise to Bob to protect Tiff for as long as possible, and that the promise had to be honoured even if it was at her expense.

Isn’t this emerging parent/child alliance interesting? I worry for those not a part of it in this late stage of the game. Already it crosses over into two teams and it’s likely to gain force and momentum as the game moves into singles this week.

I can’t wait to see the contestants’ reaction to this news when Ajay breaks it to them on tonight’s episode. And I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Sammy’s face when she learns that Teresa has passed on the Double bracelet to her.

Be sure to tune in tonight at 7PM on TEN and then check your inbox in the morning for my daily updates.
