Alison's Biggest Loser Blog: an insider's view of the Couples series

Hi everyone! Alison Braun here… 1 February 2009 was a great day for me because it’s the day The Biggest Loser returned to our TV screens and it’s also the day I launched this blog which I hope will keep you updated, inspired and down with all the gossip during the Couples series.

So… what did I think of the first episode? Um, brilliant! Awesome! Heartbreaking! Intriguing! Down-right inspiring! What other ways can you say FANTASTIC? Loser just gets better and better each year, doesn’t it!

That said, I was experiencing just a tiny touch of j-e-a-l-o-u-s-y when I saw the Couples arrive at Fitzroy Island. This time last year, I was rolling around in mud, fighting for a place in the ‘White House’! So what’s with taking the couples to paradise?!

Anyway, I’m not sure about you, but the tears started flowing for me in the first five minutes. When Jodi and Jeda said goodbye to their babies it was waterworks, let me tell you! Then, when Ben said goodbye to his dad, I almost had to turn off the TV. My heart went out to Mel when she shared how her sister had called her a ‘whale’ when they were growing up; and I even choked up when I heard that Andrew had had a stroke at such a young age.

I guess that all this heartbreak reminded me of a very important lesson: you have to make sacrifices and face your demons to achieve the big rewards in life.

And isn’t that just what Teresa did when she stormed off from the banquet and returned with a bin? I love that girlfriend already! She took control of her life, and that’s what we all have to do. It’s what we do each and every day when we’re trying to lose weight or maintain it.

In fact, Teresa actually inspired me to take ‘control’ of the half-eaten tub of ice cream which has been in the freezer, calling my name (rather loudly in this heat, I have to say!). After watching the show, I got up from the couch and chucked it (rather ceremoniously) in the bin and said, “Because I’m never going back there again!”

If you haven’t tried this yourself, you’ve really got to. It’s very cleansing and empowering. For all of you newbies, this is your Week 1 Challenge. For all of you old-hands like me, go back and revisit your Week 1 Challenge!

I’d love to hear what you threw out, what you said goodbye to and what it meant to you so please share your stories in The Biggest Loser Club forum.

In the meantime, my advice to all of the Couples is to make the most of this journey. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity and I will love watching each and every episode.

To all my friends out there in the Biggest Loser community: I want to remind you that this is our time to shine. Let’s all of us soak up the inspiration and motivation we get from the next couple of months of Loser and use this to turn our lives around!

Tomorrow night is the Couples’ first official weigh-in: tune in at 7:00PM on TEN and remember to check your inbox tomorrow morning for my next update.

Till then, believe in yourself… and see you at The Club!
xo Ali B.

Episode 1 highlights

Missed the show? No worries, you can watch the entire episode at The Biggest Loser website. Here are my favourite bits from episode 1:

Hello, goodbye

This is where we meet the couples and they say goodbye to their friends and family... it's also where I bawled my eyes out!

Binning the banquet

This is that very inspiring part where Teresa triumphs over her old food ‘friends’.
