Brothers: Chris and Michael

As Chris helps Michael downsize for the army, being part of The Biggest Loser Club Second Chance Challenge is just their first step in a completely new lifestyle concept.

Chris Byrnes

Age: 26
Occupation: Abattoir Labourer
State: VIC
Now: 155.8kg
Goal: 85kg

Twenty-six-year-old Chris Byrnes has worked in restaurants most of his adult life. “It was a dream come true to start an apprenticeship at a local five star eatery. I have lived my working life in and around kitchens enjoying and quite often indulging in fine wine and awesome food.” When not working, Chris says he often turns to fast foods and generally comfort eats to overcome boredom and loneliness.

Chris recently started to share a home with his youngest brother, Michael. After a lot of talking, the duo decided to make big changes and improve their lives. Chris says, “We decided to do The Biggest Loser Club Second Chance Challenge together and ultimately I want to do what I can to help my little brother realise his dream of being accepted into the army."

Michael Gaffney

Age: 20
Occupation: Slaughterman
State: VIC
Now: 112.3kg
Goal: 73kg

Younger brother to Chris, Michael Gaffney loves AFL and has wanted to join the Australian Defence Force for as long as he can remember. The 20-year-old didn’t take much notice of his weight until he went along for an interview to join the army. His rejection letter, which cites his weight as being the reason that he wasn’t offered the chance to take part in his dream career, is now pinned to his wall as a constant reminder of why he is starting his weight-loss journey, and why he will see it through!

Michael also fears that being too heavy might force him to give up his beloved footy. Despite being a young man, he already has some real concerns for his future health.

Having consulted dieticians about his weight issues Michael admits to making, “very little effort with diet and exercise” and feels that having a good time with his mates a little too often has brought him to where he is on the scales. That was until now! Michael says “I know now that the only thing holding me back is my weight, but that won’t be for much longer!”
