In her teens, Angie Bamford promised she would be fit and healthy by the time she was 21. She made the same promise when her mid 20s rolled around, but with the big 3-0 rapidly approaching, Angie knew she was facing crunch time.

The 29-year old recruitment consultant from WA knew she didn’t want to be 30-something and unhappy about her weight. Angie says, “I suppose I was just finally tired of being heavier than I wanted to be. I wanted to be able to wear the clothes I liked.

“All those promises I had made to myself and not kept came back to haunt me when the age of 29 appeared out of nowhere. I knew then that it really was time to get a grip on this weight thing, so I started to focus my life on that and everything else went on the back burner.”

Angie chose The Biggest Loser Club because, as she puts it, “I am addicted to the TV series and was really motivated by the personal stories, the struggles and the successes that opened up to me on the screen. The stories on the show really motivated me and I said to myself, ‘If these ordinary people can do it, then why can’t I?'"

Discovering The Club

“Once I joined The Biggest Loser Club, I really got into reading about other Club members’ lives and it was great to get a feel for people who were living with similar challenges to my own. Another favourite was the success stories as they made me even more motivated.”

Angie started her journey in February 2008. Gradually she learned about the right foods and portion sizes for her. “My favourite tool is the diary. Using the diary was just so easy. I entered the information about what and how much I was eating and drinking and the exercise I was doing et voila! I knew exactly my calories in and calories out. It was so simple and a real eye opener!”

Angie also went from rarely exercising to enjoying regular gym work. Angie says, “I have a great personal trainer (thanks, John from Motivate in WA!) and he has given me heaps of advice. We train three times a week and his encouragement really inspires me. I also do two gym sessions on my own."

From her starting weight of 103.7kg, Angie has lost a fantastic 32.6kg to bring her current weight to 71.1kg.

Angie’s weight-loss tips

Although it was always at the back of her mind, Angie now realises that she wasn’t in a real hurry to lose her excess weight. She says, “If you’re starting your own journey be aware that the changes you make won’t bring results instantly; it will be a slow process with downs as well as ups so get ready for them! It took years to put the weight on and will take a while to get it off, but it can be done. Perseverance is the key.”

Angie also encourages you to buddy up. “Join a group activity,” she says. “I find going to the gym with a girlfriend in the morning gets me out of bed because when we have a gym ‘date’, we don’t cancel it under any circumstances!”

Angie is now more confident and more energetic than she can remember. She says, “I get up at 5.30am and go to the gym before work. I didn’t realise that I have exactly the same amount of hours in a day as everyone else – it’s how you choose to use them that counts.

“The Biggest Loser Club has taught me so much about calories and nutrition, which made making the right choices so much easier.  Joining the site was a major step for me. If I was going to pay good money to join then I was going to use it and I did!”
